The relationship between Marathon Maniacs and Fleet Feet Sports inspired a new venture in June of 2006. With the obvious void of distance races in Tacoma, Tony Phillippi and Paul Morrison set out to bring the marathon back to the City of Tacoma.

After joining forces to form the Tacoma City Marathon Association and in May of 2007 the marathon was back! Since then we have added new running events from 5K’s to an Ultra marathon.

In 2012 we opened up our new TCMA office above the Fleet Feet Tacoma store. With The Marathon Maniacs, Half Fanatics, Fleet Feet Run Club and Tacoma City Running Club it has truly become running central! Together we are committed to providing quality running events, giving our sponsors maximum exposure in conjunction with the event as well as making a positive social and economic impact on the City of Tacoma.

Tony Phillippi

The Main Maniac / Co-Race Director

Tony ran track and played soccer in school. After a short hiatus from running, he returned to the running world. In May of 2003, Tony and two friends started the now largest marathon running club in the world called the Marathon Maniacs then in 2009 started the Half Fanatics. Both clubs now have over 33,000 members. In 2006 Tony also teamed up with Databar Inc. to create Databar Events! Tony has run all distances including over 280 marathons and is a 9-time Ironman finisher. He enjoys training with friends and traveling to races.

Paul Morrison

Co-Race Director

Paul has been running for over 31 years and, since the age of 12, had dreamed of opening his own running store. Fleet Feet Sports is Paul’s dream come to life, in 2012 Paul opened a second Fleet Feet store in Tacoma. An experienced runner, Paul has competed in a variety of races; however, he particularly enjoys running marathons and ultra marathons. Paul is also an avid Master’s runner and enjoys recruiting fellow Master’s runners for various (and sometimes muddy) running adventures. He frequently enjoys a Starbucks treat with his Fleet Feet friends, and spending time with his family and dogs.

Marylee Martucci

Co-Race Director

I am a latecomer to running. Growing up I never fully appreciated my parents’ love of the sport. Although I ran occasionally for years, it wasn't until I moved to Dubai that I jumped in with both feet. On a whim I decided to join the Dubai Creek Striders, a local distance running club, for their weekly run. I wasn't sure if I could run the entire 10 miles, but I finished with a smile on my face. I was hooked!  I became a student of the sport and began working with a running coach. With the support of the running community and structured training, I realized I am a runner.  The only limits are those I place on myself.  I ran my first marathon in Chicago in 2013 where I qualified for Boston.  Crossing that finish line, I fell in love with the challenge and spirit of the marathon.  You can find me training on the streets of Tacoma and exploring the beautiful trails of the Pacific Northwest.  My sights and heart are on future goals, and I am running to achieve my dreams!

Kriss Schatza

Director of Operations

Kriss started running in 2008. Her story is like that of many runners- after MANY years of being inactive she needed a change. When I started running, I  will tell you, it wasn’t pretty. I had no clue as to where to really start. But, I persisted, I didn’t give up. My first race was a 5K in Dover, DE. Flash forward to 2019….the half marathon is my favorite distance, I have completed 70 of them. (Half Fanatic #11610) I have done a handful of full marathons, but I appreciate the half marathon distance so much more! I love training within a group setting as well as mentoring for a local training group. I have met the most wonderful people and am proud of the friendships I have formed all from running. The contacts I have made are amazing, friends all over the USA! I was semi-retired (at least in my mind) when I decided to join the TCMA Events team. It truly doesn’t actually seem like work when you are enjoying what you are doing! Although now that I work for TCMA I won’t be able to run their events, but I do still get to see everyone and the running social hour is my favorite!  After running in more races then I can count, although I do keep a spreadsheet…. It is a great experience to see what goes on behind the scenes at running events. As a race participant I never knew half of the planning that was involved.  See you at the races!
