At the Tacoma City Marathon Association, we believe running is better together. Through our training groups, we aim to create a supportive and inclusive community where every runner feels empowered to achieve their personal best. Whether you’re just starting your running journey, returning after time away, or striving for a new goal, our programs are designed to meet you where you are and help you go further. 

Led by experienced coaches and grounded in science-based training principles, our programs offer something for everyone. With multiple options to fit your goals and ability level, we’re here to guide and support you every step of the way. Together, we’ll not only build stronger runners but a stronger community.

Program Features:

  • Choose a 14-week training plan based on your goals.
  • Two coached group workouts per week tailored to your goal:
    • Wednesday Workouts at 6:00 pm (optional morning session may be added if there is enough interest). Speed workouts to improve your personal pace.
    • Saturday Long Runs at 8:00 am. Organized and supported group runs focused on building endurance.
  • Location: Group runs will take place at various locations in the north end of Tacoma.
  • Online training platform and community to stay connected with your coach and team members.
  • Customized training paces to ensure you are training at the appropriate intensities.
  • Never miss a run with daily text/email reminders of workouts.
  • Weekly newsletters and expert-led supplemental training sessions to broaden your training and enhance the running experience.
  • Course-specific training runs designed to prepare runners for the 2025 Tacoma City Marathon on May 4, 2025.
  • Program participants receive discount on 2025 Tacoma City Marathon registration fee.

Find the Plan That Fits Your Running Goals

Half Marathon or Marathon Training Plan

Choose from Level 1 or Level 2

Level 1:

  • For the runner relatively new to the distance, a previously injured runner, or an experienced runner at this distance who prefers a gentler approach with less overall volume & intensity.
  • There is little difference between your easy pace and race pace.
  • For Level 1 Marathon training we recommend that participants have consistently been training at least 15 miles total per week for 3 months and can complete a long run of 8 miles or 90 minutes at a pace of at least 13 minutes per mile.
  • For Level 1 Half Marathon training we recommend that participants have been training consistently with at least 10 total miles per week for 2 or more months and can complete a long run of 4 miles or 60 minutes.
  • Inclusive of a four-week base building plan delivered prior to the start of group training. The base training plan will begin on December 26.

Level 2:

  • For the experienced runner at this distance who has been running consistently, injury-free and wishes to improve their time.
  • Level 2 includes more overall volume and intensity than Level 1.
  • Inclusive of a four-week base building plan delivered prior to the start of group training. The base training plan will begin on December 26.

Cost: $140

Fundamentals Training Plan

  • Ideal for someone looking to return to running after a break or injury
  • This is not a couch to 5K program, however it is suitable for someone newer to running with general fitness.
  • A structured program to build consistency in training, gradually increasing volume and intensity.
  • Participants should be able to run/walk for at least 30 minutes at the start of training.

Cost: $140

Group Runs Only

  • For runners seeking a supportive group environment, structured workouts, and camaraderie on long runs.
  • This program includes Wednesday quality (speed) sessions and Saturday group long runs, with no additional prescribed training plan provided.
  • Participants can customize their experience by choosing from a variety of workout options on Wednesdays and selecting their preferred distance for Saturday long runs.

Cost: $90

Virtual Training Option

  • For runners who want the structure and support of a training program but don’t live in the local area.
  • This program offers the flexibility to train wherever you are, with access to one of our structured plans: Half Marathon, Marathon, or Fundamentals Training.
  • Participants receive weekly guidance, accountability, and support from our experienced coaching team—all delivered virtually to help you achieve your goals from a distance.

Can I switch training programs? (e.g., Half Marathon Level 1 to Level 2 or Marathon to Half Marathon)

Yes, you can switch plans! Speak with your coach, and we’ll help adjust your training to find the program that best suits your goals. 

How old do you need to be to participate?

Participants must be at least 18 years old. 

Do I need to be an experienced runner to join?

Not at all! Our programs welcome runners of all levels—from those newer to running to seasoned runners chasing new goals. 

What happens if I can’t attend a group run?

No problem! You’ll still have access to your training plan and can complete the scheduled workout on your own

What should I bring to group runs?

Bring water or hydration, weather-appropriate clothing, and any nutrition you may need for longer runs. For safety purposes, a reflective vest and lighting are required for Wednesday night runs.  A GPS watch is highly recommended.

What is the weather policy?

We train rain or shine! However, in the event of hazardous weather such as lightning or icy roads, group runs may be postponed or canceled to ensure everyone’s safety. 

Can I run with pets?

We love our furry friends, but for the safety and comfort of all participants, pets are not allowed on group runs. 

Are refunds available?

No refunds will be issued for any reason, including injury. However, participants may cancel their registration until the end of the first week of training and transfer the credit to another program within the same calendar year.
