At TCMA, we believe running is better together. Fartlek University blends community, coaching, and a training approach that makes running effective and fun—rooted in the original meaning of “fartlek,” or speed play.

This 9-week performance-focused training program is designed to help you improve your pace, build strength, and develop stamina to run stronger across all distances. Whether you’re newer to speed work or ready to challenge your current pace, this program gives you the structure and support to move forward with intention.

Our Summer Performance Training Program is designed to help you move beyond simply logging miles and into more intentional training—where each workout has a purpose, and every session helps you build toward stronger, faster running.

Why Fartlek University?

Training should be more than just miles—it should be purposeful, progressive, and engaging.

Fartlek University is built on the idea that understanding your training is just as important as completing it. Throughout the program, you’ll not only follow structured workouts, but you’ll learn the “why” behind them—giving you the tools to train smarter, not just harder.

Our Summer program places a greater emphasis on performance—helping you improve your pace, build strength, and develop the stamina needed to run stronger and more efficiently. Through a combination of speed work, runner specific strength training, and progressive overload, you’ll gain both the physical and mental tools to take your running to the next level.

More than a run. It’s a movement—building community through every step.

What’s Included:

This program includes two coached group workouts per week, each designed with a specific purpose to help you become a stronger, more resilient runner.

Monday Evenings at 6:00 PM — Strength + Mobility  for the Resilient Runner
Each session begins with an easy pace group run, followed by mobility work and runner-specific strength training. These workouts focus on unilateral movement, core strength, stability, and mobility—helping you improve running mechanics, build durability, and reduce injury risk.

Wednesdays at 7:00 AM or 6:00 PM — Speed + Stamina
Our midweek sessions are focused on improving your personal pace and building stamina. Workouts are progressive and structured, incorporating intervals, hill work, tempo efforts, fartlek sessions, and running drills. Each workout is scaled to your current fitness level and designed to help you run more efficiently and confidently at faster paces.

Group runs will take place at various locations throughout Tacoma.
