The 20 Year Marathon Maniac Reunion

We’re excited to announce that the Tacoma City Marathon will be hosting the 20 Year Marathon Maniacs Reunion in 2023! Mark your calendar for the weekend of April 29 & 30, 2023 and join us for the return of the Ghost of Tacoma on Saturday and the Tacoma City Marathon on Sunday with Marathon Relay, Half Marathon and 5k options available.

The Marathon and Half Marathon are point-to-point courses running across the iconic Narrows Bridge and finishing at Tacoma’s beautiful Dune Peninsula Park at Point Ruston, the Northwest’s premier waterfront neighborhood. This picturesque entertainment and recreation hub is situated along Commencement Bay with panoramic views of the Puget Sound, the Olympic and Cascade Mountain ranges.

Runners will enjoy a scenic, USATF-Certified and Boston Qualifying course that passes through Point Defiance Park, with over 700 acres of beautiful gardens and old growth forests. After exiting Pt. Defiance, the Marathon and Half Marathon runners will cross over the Wilson Way Bridge with a sweet half mile downhill to the Puget Sound and Dune Peninsula Park where the Half Marathon will finish. The Marathon will continue down the flat and fast waterfront with views of Mt. Rainier and the Puget Sound. The Marathon turnaround is along the Thea Foss Waterway Esplanade and the beautiful Museum of Glass.

Train for the Tacoma City 5k with Fleet Feet Tacoma and Fleet Feet Bonney Lake!

Are you interested in training for your first 5k but don’t know where to start? Maybe you’ve run a 5k before but want to improve your time? Join the Fleet Feet Tacoma ignite! Training Group or the Fleet Feet Bonney Lake ignite! Training Group and train for the Tacoma City 5k on April 30th! This 8-week program kicks off the week of March 7th with the first group workout on Tuesday evening, March 8th.

The Tacoma group will meet at the Fleet Feet Tacoma store on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings and the Bonney Lake group will meet at Alan Yorke Park or the Foothills Trail at McMillan on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. Already registered for a different spring race but want to train with the group? Not a problem! The coaches at Fleet Feet are happy to help adjust your plan so you can meet your goals, too. The Point Ruston Garage and street parking around Point Ruston is complimentary up to one hour, please do not park in the valet circle at the Silver Cloud Hotel.

Day-of-Race Packet Pickup will available be from 6:00 am – 7:15 am at the Marathon/Half-Marathon Start Line / 6:45 am – 7:45 am at the 5K Start Line. You may also have someone else pick up your race packet for you.

Shuttle Bus
You must purchase a Bus Ticket to board the shuttle buses, this helps us offset the cost of bus rentals without increasing registration fees and helps us determine how many buses we’ll need for race day. You will receive a wrist band at packet pick-up that you should wear to board the bus. If you purchase your bus ticket online after 6:00 pm on Friday, you will need to bring your purchase confirmation (either on your phone or printed).

If you’d prefer to drive yourself, or get dropped off, please keep in mind there is a toll-fee to cross the Tacoma Narrows Bridge ($5.25 with a Good To Go! Pass / $6.25 Toll Booth / $7.25 Pay by Mail). Limited parking is available at the Tacoma Narrows Airport. You can also be dropped off at the Start Line.

Shuttle Buses will depart from the loop behind the Farelli’s at Point Ruston where there is a large covered area the starting at 5:00 am to 6:45 am. Do not wait for the last bus. The return shuttle will go continually back and forth from the Finish Line Parking Lot to the Start Line at Tacoma Narrows Airport. Return shuttles will run from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm.

Gear Check
Gear check is provided for your personal items at the start line. Participants will be provided with a bag to use for gear check. Please tear your gear check tab off of your bib and hand it to the gear check volunteer. Please do not put valuables in your bag. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items. You may claim your bag after you finish by providing your bib number.

Course Support (Half and Full Marathon)
Water, Gatorade, Vaseline, and Porta-Potties will be provided at all water stations. Additionally, various aid stations will be supply energy gels. Aid Stations will be approximately every 2 miles. Medical personnel will be on the course and at the finish.

Pacers (Half and Full Marathon)
Marathon Maniac and Half Fanatic Pacers will be there to help you reach your goal for the full and half marathon distances.
Marathon Pacers: 3:30, 3:50, 4:00, 4:10
Half Pacers: 1:50, 2:00, 2:10, 2:30 

Early Start
Participants requiring more than 6 hours for the Full Marathon may start 1 hour early. All early starters must be self-sufficient and familiarize themselves with the course. Runners taking the early start will be disqualified if they finish under 5 hours.

Time Limit (Half and Full Marathon)
There is a time limit of 6 hours for the Full Marathon (13:45 minutes per mile average pace), 4 hours for the Half Marathon (22:54 min avg. pace). All of those remaining on the course must move to the sidewalks and obey pedestrian laws. The timing mats, medical staff, and finish line amenities will remain at the finish until all participants have finished.  

Finish Line Amenities
Once you cross the finish line, you will be greeted with food and water to aid in your recovery as well as medical assistance provided by Multicare and Mobile IV hydration available from RevIVe Drip.

This year’s finish line party at Dune Penninsula Park will include a variety of vendors and food trucks, live music by Stan the Guitar Man & Moonyard, massage services available from BeHive Massage and athletic trainers from Olympic Sport & Spine.

Awards for the top Overall Male & Female and age group ribbons will be available for pick up at your convenience at the results tent*.

Age group ribbons will be given out to the top 5 finishers in the following age groups: 9 & under,10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80+

How to Claim Your Ribbon
After you have finished your race, check the results computers. If your results are not yet posted please check back again in 10-15 minutes as they are updated often.

If you are in the top 5 in your age group, proceed to the awards table to claim your ribbon. Congratulations!

*Awards will not be mailed out after the race, so please pick up your ribbon before leaving!

To be eligible for overall and age group awards you cannot be paced by or accept aid from a non-registered runner at any time during the event. USATF rules: if you win both an overall and age group spot you will be presented with both awards. Overall winners ARE NOT knocked out of their respective age group.

Where can I park for the event?

Paid parking is available at Point Ruston, there is free parking on the surrounding streets outside of Point Ruston.

Is there a Military discount available?

Yes, there is a $5 discount for military personnel. You will see a checkbox on the registration page. You must show your Military ID at packet pick up.

Can I switch race distances after I have signed up?

Yes, you can switch distances at packet pickup. There are no refunds.If you move up in distances, please be prepared to pay the price difference. Pick up your packet first and then go to the registration table where the timer will reassign your bib number.

Can an entry be transferred to someone else?

No transfers, sorry no exceptions.

Is my entry fee refundable?

Our policy is no refunds, no transfers to another individual or to another TCMA event, and no rollovers to the next year’s race. Sorry, no exceptions.

Can I pick up someone else's race packet?

Yes, as long as you have permission from them to do so. Written permission is not required.

Can I pick up my race packet on race day?

Yes, you can but to avoid race day anxiety we strongly suggest picking your number up at Friday Packet Pickup.

What time does the race start?

Marathon & Half: 7:30 am at Tacoma Narrows Airport
5K: 8:00 am at Dune Peninsula Park

Can I start the marathon 1 hour early at 6:30 AM?

Yes, there is an early start provided for those needing more than 6 hours to complete the Marathon. Please check in with the timer at the start line. Early starters finishing the marathon under 5 hours will be disqualified and not given a finish time. You must need the extra time to start early. Early starters must be self-supported, know the route, and obey all traffic/pedestrian laws until officers and volunteers are on the course. You are on your own until officers and volunteers arrive on the course.

Will there be professional photographers on the course?

Yes, photos will be provided by CJ Photography.

Is the race Chip Timed?

Yes, Chip Start, Chip Finish. Your timing tag is attached to the back of your race bib. In order to receive a time your race bib must be worn on the outside of your top outer garment. Avoid bending your bib which may damage the timing tag. The timing tag is disposable so it does not need to be returned.

How many miles is the Tacoma City Marathon?

26.2 miles or 42,195 meters.

Can you walk the Marathon?

We have a 7-hour cut off with the early start. 16 minute per mile pace with the early start.

Can you walk the Half Marathon?

We have a 4-hour cut off. If the police don’t think you can make it in the allotted time you may be moved to the sidewalk, the finish line will remain until you finish.

Are strollers allowed?

Yes, in the 5K & Half Marathon only.

Are dogs allowed?

Sorry, not for this event.

What is the average temperature for April in Tacoma?

Yes, at all the aid stations (about every two miles).

Can I wear headphones during the race?

Yes, be safe and don’t turn them up so loud that you can’t hear volunteers or police. We recommend leaving one earbud out. Be safe out there.

Yes. Provided by The Marathon Maniacs and Half Fanatics.

Are the courses USATF certified?

Tacoma City Marathon and Half Marathon have always been USATF Certified Courses. Marathon – WA22005RMB / Half Marathon – WA22004RMB

Will there be energy gel on the course?

Yes, energy gels & Electrolyte drinks will be on the course.

Where can spectators view the race?

There are several spots along the course where you can watch and cheer on your runners. Please avoid crossing the course.

Mile 3: War Memorial Park
Mile 6: Vassualt Park by way of 6th ave & Pearl Street
Mile 12: Park under the Wilson Way Bridge and walk up the steps to the bridge
Mile 16: Park on N 30th St and walk down McCarver to Ruston Way path or Chinese Reconciliation Garden
Mile 19.5: Park at 21st St bridge park on Dock St at the Marathon turnaround

Can I track a runner?

We don’t have a tracking system for the race, but if your runner has a smart watch with tracking, they can share that information with friends and family. If your they plan to run with a phone, you can use Strava Beacon or a similar app to live track.
