We’re excited to announce that the Tacoma City Marathon will return in 2022! Mark your calendar for Saturday, April 30, 2022 and join us for the Tacoma City Marathon, Half Marathon and 5k. After 2 years away due to the pandemic, we’re thrilled to be bringing the marathon back to Tacoma.

The 2022 Marathon and Half Marathon will be point-to-point courses running across the iconic Narrows Bridge and finishing at Tacoma’s beautiful Dune Peninsula Park at Point Ruston, the Northwest’s premier waterfront neighborhood. This picturesque entertainment and recreation hub is situated along Commencement Bay with panoramic views of the Puget Sound, the Olympic and Cascade Mountain ranges.

Runners will enjoy a scenic, USATF-Certified and Boston Qualifying course that passes through Point Defiance Park, with over 700 acres of beautiful gardens and old growth forests. After exiting Pt. Defiance, the Marathon and Half Marathon runners will cross over the Wilson Way Bridge with a sweet half mile dowhill to the Puget Sound and Dune Peninsula Park where the Half Marathon will finish. The Marathon will continue down the flat and fast waterfront with views of Mt. Rainier and the Puget Sound. The Marathon turnaround is along the Thea Foss Waterway Esplanade and the beautiful Museum of Glass.

We highly recommend you pick up your packet on Thursday or Friday prior to race day to avoid long lines on race morning. Shirts will only be available at packet pick-up & the finish line.

Shuttle Bus
Shuttle Buses will depart from Farrelli’s Pizza at Point Ruston from 4:30 am to 6:30 am. Do not wait for the last bus.
The return shuttle will go continually back and forth from the Finish Line Parking Lot to the Start Line at Tacoma Narrows Airport. Return shuttles will run from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
Limited parking is available at the Tacoma/Narrows Airport. You can also be dropped off at the Start Line.

Gear Check
Gear check is provided for your personal items at the start line. Participants will be provided with a bag to use for gear check. Please tear your gear check tab off of your bib and hand it to the gear check volunteer.  Please do not put valuables in your bag. We are not responsible for lost or stolen items. You may claim your bag after you finish by providing your bib number.

Course Support (Half and Full Marathon)
Water, Nuun Electrolyte, Vaseline, and Porta-Potties will be provided at all water stations. Additionally, various aid stations will be supply energy gels. Aid Stations will be approximately every 2 miles. Medical personnel will be on the course and at the finish.

Pacers (Half and Full Marathon)
Marathon Maniac and Half Fanatic Pacers will be there to help you reach your goal for the full and half marathon distances.

Early Start
Participants requiring more than 6 hours for the Full Marathon may start 1 hour early. All early starters must be self-sufficient and familiarize themselves with the course. Runners taking the early start will be disqualified if they finish under 5 hours.

Time Limit (Half and Full Marathon)
There is a time limit of 6 hours for the Full Marathon (13:45 minutes per mile average pace), 4 hours for the Half Marathon (22:54 min avg. pace). All of those remaining on the course must move to the sidewalks and obey pedestrian laws. The timing mats, medical staff, and finish line amenities will remain at the finish until all participants have finished.

Once you cross the finish line, you will be greeted with a variety of food and water to aid in your recovery.

Age Group Ribbons
Age group ribbons will be given out to the top 5 finishers in the following age groups: 9 & under,10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80+

How to Claim Your Ribbon
After you have finished your race, check the results computers. If your results are not yet posted please check back again in 10-15 minutes as they are updated often.

If you are in the top 5 in your age group, proceed to the awards table to claim your ribbon. Congratulations!

*Awards will not be mailed out after the race, so please pick up your ribbon before leaving!

To be eligible for overall and age group awards you cannot be paced by or accept aid from a non-registered runner at any time during the event. 
USATF rules: if you win both an overall and age group spot you will be presented with both awards. Overall winners ARE NOT knocked out of their respective age group.

Where can I park for the event?

Parking is available at Point Ruston and free on the surrounding streets.

Is there a Military discount available?

Yes, there is a $5 discount for military personnel. You will see a checkbox on the registration page. You must show your Military ID at packet pick up.

Can I switch race distances after I have signed up?

Yes, you can switch distances at packet pickup. There are no refunds.If you move up in distances, please be prepared to pay the price difference. Pick up your packet first and then go to the registration table where the timer will reassign your bib number.

Can an entry be transferred to someone else?

No transfers, sorry no exceptions.

Is my entry fee refundable?

Our policy is no refunds, no transfers to another individual or to another TCMA event, and no rollovers to the next year’s race. Sorry, no exceptions.

Can I pick up someone else's race packet?

Yes, as long as you have permission from them to do so. Written permission is not required.

Can I pick up my race packet on race day?

Yes, you can but to avoid race day anxiety we strongly suggest picking your number up at Packet Pickup. Packet pickup will be available until 7 pm.

What time does the race start?

Marathon & Half: 7:30 am at Tacoma Narrows Airport
5K: 8:00 am at Dune Peninsula Park

Can I start the marathon 1 hour early at 6:30 AM?

Yes, there is an early start provided for those needing more than 6 hours to complete the Marathon. Please check in with the timer at the start line. Early starters finishing the marathon under 5 hours will be disqualified and not given a finish time. You must need the extra time to start early. Early starters must be self-supported, know the route, and obey all traffic/pedestrian laws until officers and volunteers are on the course. You are on your own until officers and volunteers arrive on the course.

Will there be professional photographers on the course?

Yes, photos will be provided by CJ Photography.

Is the race Chip Timed?

Yes, Chip Start, Chip Finish. Your timing tag is attached to the back of your race bib. In order to receive a time your race bib must be worn on the outside of your top outer garment. Avoid bending your bib which may damage the timing tag. The timing tag is disposable so it does not need to be returned.

How many miles is the Tacoma City Marathon?

26.2 miles or 42,195 meters.

Can you walk the Marathon?

We have a 7-hour cut off with the early start. 16 minute per mile pace with the early start.

Can you walk the Half Marathon?

We have a 4-hour cut off. If the police don’t think you can make it in the allotted time you may be moved to the sidewalk, the finish line will remain until you finish.

Are strollers allowed?

Yes, in the 5K & Half Marathon only.

Are dogs allowed?

Sorry, not for this event.

What is the average temperature for April in Tacoma?

Is there a gear check at the start?

Yes, at all the aid stations (about every two miles).

Can I wear headphones during the race?

Yes, be safe and don’t turn them up so loud that you can’t hear volunteers or police. We recommend leaving one earbud out. Be safe out there.

Will there be pacers?

Yes. Provided by The Marathon Maniacs and Half Fanatics.

Are the courses USATF certified?

Tacoma City Marathon and Half Marathon have always been USATF Certified Courses, certification is pending for 2022.

Will there be energy gel on the course?

Yes, energy gels & Nuun Electrolyte will be on the course.

Mask Policy
In accordance with the Washington State Department of Health, people five years and older (vaccinated or not) are required to wear a face covering at outdoor events with 500 or more people, such as Tacoma City Marathon Association events. We strongly recommend that children between 2 and 4 years old also wear masks.

We will be reminding all participants and spectators to keep their masks on in the start/finish line areas of our events and to practice social distancing whenever possible. Please stay home if you are sick or have any symptoms. The health and safety of our participants, volunteers and staff remains a top priority for TCMA and we are committed to doing what we can to keep our community safe. We appreciate your cooperation!
