DEFIANCE 50K, 30K, & 15K

The Defiance 50k / 30k / 15k is scenic race that takes runners through the beautiful trails of Point Defiance, with over 700 acres of old growth forests and panoramic views of the Puget Sound. This year’s race will take place on Saturday, October 15, 2022.

Start – Finish: Main Picnic Area near aquarium. (Aid Station)
Mile 3.51 – 500-year-old tree
Mile 3.96 – Gig Harbor viewpoint
Mile 5.22 – SW corner of Ft Nisqually (Aid Station)
Elevation Gain and Loss per loop are 1,306 feet.

The course is a 16.6-kilometer loop through old growth forest. For the 15k runners will complete this loop once, for the 30k runners will run the loop twice and for the 50k runners will run the loop three times. Each loop will come by the start – finish.

The course is mostly single track and typically dry mid-October. Train for some hills but the course is 95% run-able.

Aid will be available at the Start / Finish. Each loop comes through the Start / Finish. An aid station is located at Ft Nisqually approximately 5.3 miles into the 10.3-mile loop. We recommend carrying one bottle of water.

On the course, you will see sweeping views of the Puget Sound, run on soft trails beneath 500-year-old giant cedars and firs in one of the top 20 urban parks in the United States.

Water, Nuun electrolyte and food will be provided at water stations. Medical personel will be at the start/finish area. There are aid stations at the start/finish and at approximately mile 5.22.

All race distances are chip timed by Racewire (chip start/finish).


There is a time limit of 8 hours. To make sure all runners are within this time-limit, there is a cutoff time of 1:00 pm for the start of the third loop. We will close the course at 4:00 pm.

Packet pick up on October 15th is strongly recommended. 

You may pick up someone else’s race pack as long as you have permisssion from them to do so. Written permission is not required. ‘Last Gasp’ registration will be availabe at the registration table at packet pickup. We accept cash, check and credit card (small transaction fee applies for card payment). Receipt available upon request.

We recommend parking parking near the Point Defiance Marina in the Overflow Boat Launch parking. There is easy access to stairs from waterfront to starting area just near the parking lot. You may also park at marina and take stairs to top. Please see map below…

Can I switch race distances after I have signed up? Yes, you can switch distances at packet pick-up. There are no refunds. If you move up in distances please be prepared to pay the price difference. Pick up your packet first and then go to the registration table where the timer will reassign your bib number.

What if I sustain an injury or can’t make it to the event, what are my options? Sorry, there are no refunds or rollovers for any reason.

I registered, but have learned that I will be unable to participate. Is my entry fee refundable? Our policy is no refunds, no transfers to another individual or to another TCMA event, and no rollovers to the next year’s race. Sorry, no exceptions.

Can an entry be transferred to someone else? No.

Can I pick up someone else’s race packet? Yes, as long as you have permission from them to do so. Written permission is not required.

Can I pick up my race packet on race day? Yes, there will be packet pick-up on race day at the start from 6:30 am to 7:45 am.

Will I get a shirt? Yes, long sleeve tech shirts are included with registration.

What time does the race start? At 8:00 AM but we will offer a rolling start until 8:30 to allow for more social distancing.

Can I start early? For this race, there is no early start available.

Do I need to carry water at the race? We recommend you carry one bottle.

Will there be professional photographers on the course? Yes. Race photography will be provided by CJ Photography. Photogs will be available approximately 3 business days after the race and FREE to download.

Is the race Chip Timed? Yes, Chip Start, Chip Finish.

Do you get a finisher medal? Each finisher receives a medal..

How many miles is the 50k? 31.1 miles.

Is the course flat? The course has an elevation change of 1300 feet, more information here.

Where can I park? We recommend parking at the Point Defiance Overflow boat launch parking near the Point Defiance Marina. Please visit this website for driving directions.

What is the weather like? It will be cold at the start but typically dry in mid-October. Be prepared for anything, this is the Pacific Northwest… 😉

Is there a gear check at the start? There will be a gear check table monitored by volunteers at the start/finish area. TCMA is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please do not leave any valuables at the start.

Are there porta-potties at the start? There are fixed bathrooms at the start and at Fort Nisqually.

Can I wear headphones during the race? Yes, be safe and don’t turn them up so loud that you can’t hear volunteers. We recommend leaving one earbud out. Be safe out there.
