At Tacoma City Marathon Association, we believe running is better together. Through our training groups, we aim to create a supportive and inclusive community where every runner feels empowered to pursue their personal best. Whether you’re just starting your running journey, returning after time away, or chasing a new goal, our programs are designed to meet you where you are and help you go further.

Our Fall Distance Training Program offers something for everyone. This 12-week, science-based group training program is led by a certified running coach and NASM Performance Enhancement Specialist and is built around proven training principles to help you improve safely and effectively. 

 

We’re here to guide and support you every step of the way. Together, we’ll not only build stronger runners but a stronger community.  

What’s Included:

  • Two coached group workouts per week:
    • Wednesday Workouts at 6pm (optional 7am session may be added based on interest): Progressive, structured workouts to improve personal pace, form, and stamina
    • Saturday Long Runs at 8am. Supported group runs focused on building endurance.
  • Choose from three personalized training levels— Fundamentals, Base Building, or Performance Half Marathon Plan
  • Location: North End of Tacoma (varied locations)

Find the Plan That Fits Your Running Goals

Fundamental Training Plan

Perfect for those new to running, coming back from time off or an injury, or seeking general fitness

  • Builds consistency with a progressive approach, gradually increasing volume and intensity
  • Starts with run/walk intervals and progresses to steady aerobic runs
  • Goal: Complete a 10K by the end of the program
  • Starting Point: Able to run/walk for 30 minutes.

Cost: $130 

Base Building Plan

Ideal for runners looking to build a strong aerobic base, whether you are running to improve your fitness, as a previously injured runner, or a newer runner training for longer distances up to a half-marathon. This is also a great program for someone looking to run their first marathon in the Spring to improve their aerobic base prior to marathon training.

  • Emphasis on aerobic development with one weekly speed-focused workout + progressive long runs starting at 4 miles and building to 12 miles
  • Starting Point: You’ve been running 2 to 3 times per week for the past 2+ months and are comfortable with weekly mileage starting at 10 miles.

Cost: $130

Performance-Based Half Marathon Plan

Ready to elevate your performance? Designed for experienced runners seeking a new PR or to sharpen their half-marathon performance.

  • Includes strategic speed workouts, progressive long runs (starting at 6 miles and building to 14), and deload weeks
  • Starting Point: Training consistently at ~15 miles/week for 2+ months
  • Best suited for runners who have completed a half-marathon before. If not, consider starting with the Base Building Plan

Cost: $130

*Flexibility to move between plans as needed throughout the program.

FAQ

Can I switch Levels? 

Yes, you can switch plans! Speak with your coach, and we’ll help adjust your training to find the program that best suits your goals. 

How old do you need to be to participate?

Participants must be at least 18 years old. 

Do I need to be an experienced runner to join?

Not at all! Our programs welcome runners of all levels and paces—from those newer to running to seasoned runners chasing new goals. 

What happens if I can’t attend a group run?

No problem! You’ll still have access to your training plan and can complete the scheduled workout on your own

What should I bring to group runs?

 A GPS watch with an interval function is highly recommended. For safety purposes, please have reflective gear and a headlamp or light source for evening or early morning runs. Bring water or hydration.

What is the weather policy?

We train rain or shine! However, in the event of hazardous weather such as lightning or icy roads, group runs may be postponed or canceled to ensure everyone’s safety. 

Can I run with pets?

We love our furry friends, but for the safety and comfort of all participants, pets are not allowed on group runs. 

Are refunds available?

No refunds will be issued for any reason, including injury. However, participants may cancel their registration until the end of the first week of training and transfer the credit to another program within the same calendar year.
